Embodied Writing with Audrey Ferber
Follow Your Nose
One of the hallmarks of good writing is sensory detail, the smell, touch, taste, sound and sight that readers perceive through their senses. Well-chosen sensory data can transport a reader to an experience of other worlds, distant lands or deep into a character’s interior. Much of the joy of reading is this dive into the pleasure, ecstasy, pain that comes alive for us on the page. Join us for a journey into the sense of smell, one of the most evocative senses, prized by writers for its ability to trigger memory. First, I’ll talk a bit about the olfactory sense, share some examples of great sensory writing, and then we’ll try a fun hands-on exercise and create some luscious prose of our own! Audrey Ferber is a Brooklyn writer who has lived in San Francisco for the last 54 years. Her stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times, LILITH Magazine, First Person Singular, New World Writing, Best Women’s Travel Writing, and other places. Mendocino was one of the first places she loved in California, maybe because the rugged cliffs reminded her of summers on the East Coast. |
