In this workshop, we will examine two essentials to writing an engaging text: metaphor and voice. We'll look at a number of models of both metaphor and voice in both poetry and prose, locate and name the essential aspects of each and describe how they function. We'll compare and critique bland vs. more flavorful texts, noticing the differences in the speakers' voices and identity, as well as the imaginative play that metaphor involves--and how it engages a reader . And we'll do some practice writing as well in which we play with these techniques. This class is valuable to all writers looking to kickstart a poem, story, or novel--and provide some key ways to drive development or revision.

Over the past decade, Lisa Manterfield has self-published four novels, two works of non-fiction, and five non-fiction ebooks, and coached many other authors to self-publishing success. Through her blog and podcast, she has created an online community of more than 6,000 members worldwide. Her work has been published in Los Angeles Times, Psychology Today, Huffington Post, and The Saturday Evening Post. She is an Independent Publishers Book Award winner, Best American Fiction Finalist, and UCLA Kirkwood Prize in Fiction nominee.

Shirin Yim Leos has coached writers who have secured multi-book deals from Big Five publishers, and film and television options from major entertainment companies. She is the author of twenty-one children’s books, a developmental editor, and a former publisher. Leos also leads writing retreats and teaches writing and publishing for universities and conferences internationally
