My body of work this term continues in the conversation I am currently having with light. The actual visual depiction of light and shadow; as well the metaphor it implies. What is seen and what is hidden; being drawn to, and stepping into the light; Illumination and the lack thereof. The subject matter seeks to create a sense of place with the hopes that the viewer might step inside and linger awhile. This term it was interesting to observe my work expand into a space that allowed the depiction of companionship, with figures appearing in some paintings. Having had the extraordinary healing experience of sustained sacred solitude last term, which my work deeply reflected, this year it seems there was room for company. Interesting for me to observe that even when standing with another, the images reflect a sense of expanse and breathing room between and around the figures and their environment. It is always my hope to portray the essence of sanctuary whether the space is occupied or not. As I reflect on all of this, I imagine this is a portrayal of my own temperament as a creative spirit with an indisputable need to experience freedom and expanse on so many levels, while engaging in deeply authentic relationships with those around me. It is both a delicate and empowering balance. —Linda Cloonan CWC member Harriet Gleeson has had a poem accepted for Scarlet Tanager Books (http://www.scarlettanager.com/)
forthcoming anthology Fire and Rain: Ecopoetry of California. October 1, 2018 is the scheduled publication date. The anthology editors note: "The collective contributions to this anthology come together to weave a braid of voices examining and celebrating the dazzling variety of California’s unique biological zones. This anthology will provide an arguably much-needed platform for the ecologies of California—from Sierra to Mojave Desert; valleys and streams; coast and forest—and will hopefully take its place in the canon of the finest writing and writers of our state."
