Sunday, April 21st
2:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Monica Wesolowska

Each time we remember something, we are rewriting that memory. For memoirists, that fact can be liberating. In this workshop, we’ll start by focusing on small, vivid details. We’ll press on those details to see how much more they can release. From there, we’ll move into the terrain of speculation, talking about the ethics of writing about what you don’t fully remember and how to
make meaning out of the chaos of life. This workshop will include time for writing exercises and a Q & A. Bring your curiosity and something to write with.

Monica Wesolowska is the author of the memoir Holding Silvan: A Brief Life (named a “Best Book” of the year by The Boston Globe and Library Journal) as well as two children’s picture books: Elbert in the Air and Leo + Lea (winner of an SCBWI Crystal Kite Award). Her short fiction and essays have been widely published, including in the “Modern Love” column of The New York Times. A long-time teacher of creative writing at Stanford Continuing Studies and elsewhere, Monica also works with clients as an independent editor.

The club has a new Facebook page. We Facebook Live our in-person meetings.
People who cannot attend will be able to tune in. Please Log into Facebook to Like and Follow WMC.

Reminder: You can pick up your free anthology at the next monthly meeting, and buy extra too! Extra copies are $10 (member price) and $15.95 (retail) through March.

Thanks to Emily Lloyd-Jones for an inspirational session on plotting!

Poetry Reading at Gallery Books

Saturday, March 30th
at 6PM

WMC members windflower & Elizabeth Vrenios celebrate the publication of their latest books.

Phil Zwerling's latest book, “In Search of the Thin Man:” A complete history of The Thin Man series. Dashiell Hammett, wrote The Thin Man in 1933 and launched the fun-loving, booze-swilling, mystery-solving couple Nick and Nora Charles into American culture. MGM sold millions of movie tickets casting William Powell and Myrna Loy as this classiest of romantic couples. Get your copy here.

WMC member Gene Lock was featured in the New York Times: “100 Small Acts of Love”

“Today, every day, and on Valentine’s Day, I will visit my wife of 56 years. We are separated by her dementia. I will tell her what’s been going on outside, as I spoon-feed her in her care-home hospital bed. She says, “Thank you,” when I tell her I love her. We both know she would say more, if only she could. We have had a great life together, ever since the second grade. She is slowly leaving, I know that. But we’re a pair until then.”

Gene Lock, Sacramento, Calif.

The famous poet Audre Lorde has said "Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. ”

The Redwood Writers 2023 Poetry Anthology, Phases, is out. Several of our members had poems accepted. If you would like to purchase a copy, you can find them here.

ANNUAL LITERARY REVIEW SUBMISSION CHANGE
The CWC changed its submission rules for the annual Literary Review. Each club was asked to submit entries, total number determined by the size of the club. WMC got four, two poems and two prose pieces. Editor Elizabeth Vrenios and her judges chose the four highest scoring from WMC’s 2024 Anthology “Transitions.” Congratulations to Sally Carter, Sallie Reynolds, Maureen Eppstein and Ginny Rorby.
SCHOLASTIC ART AND WRITING CONTEST
After a delay (and $1,250 more for our club’s early work), judging begins February 29. Wish us luck!

WHY WE HAVE A DONATION JAR
WMC is committed to keeping our membership renewal fee low. Almost half of our dues go to the state club, and expenses have increased. We no longer have a free space to meet. In order to attract quality speakers, we provide them with a stipend to cover travel costs, a stipend we raised post-COVID. Your donation helps WMC continue to offer quality programs.
