Marlene Cullen is enthusiastic about encouraging writers. Her series of books, The Write Spot anthologies, entertain as well as inspire writing. She hosts The Write Spot Blog, a treasure chest of inspirational gems for writers. Marlene's short stories, essays, and poetry have been published in literary journals, anthologies, and newspapers. EKPHRASIS VIII ARTIST'S CO-OP BUILDING Saturday, October 12th, 4:30 p.m. At the Artists Co-op, (wheelchair accessible)—yellow building on the NW corner of Albion and Kasten in Mendocino. See the artwork paired with writing displayed in the gallery. This event is open to the public, so you’ll bring family and friends. Please bring wine or non-alcoholic beverage and an hors d’oeuvre to share. You’ll get to meet the artist, too. Great fun. MENDOCINO HOTEL Thursday, October 17th, 6:00 p.m. Readings of the Ekphrasis pieces by both art initiator and art responder writers while the artwork is projected at our Writers of the Mendocino Coast meeting, 6:00 pm, Mendocino Hotel. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC COAST STORYTELLERS Fourth Thursday, 6:30 p.m. “Coast Storytellers” provides an opportunity for writers and storytellers to read or speak their stories on various themes. It is a loosely organized event, with no membership or officers. J. Holden is hosting the September 26 gathering, focusing on the theme “Birth and Death." Everyone is invited to share stories, thoughts, and essays, etc. on either or both these topics. Interested writers are requested to contact J. Holden at [email protected] or 707-391-7247. New Class at Mendocino College
Fall 2019 THE 210B Beginning Acting Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00-11:50 a.m. Learn fundamental acting techniques and terminology. All levels welcome—no prior work in theatre required. Students will develop ability through fun exercises, scene work, and improvisation. Instructor bio: Director, dramaturg, and producer, Virginia Reed has worked with professional theatres in Princeton, New Jersey, Los Angeles, San Francisco and numerous companies across the greater Bay Area. She has directed productions of plays by Shakespeare, adaptations of classics, experimental and contemporary plays, solo and devised performances, new plays in development by emerging playwrights, and founded a women's theatre company. POETRY WRITING WORKSHOPS AND MONTHLY POETRY OPEN MIC The workshops include samples of the various styles and techniques of poetry writing, displays of published works, in-session writing exercises along with readings and discussions of individual works produced during the workshops. Please send a short announcement to writersmendocinocoast@gmail.com WMC member Motherbear Scott wrote a review of the current MTC play, 4000 Miles, that appeared in the On Stage column of the August 8, 2019 issue of the Mendocino Beacon.
The play by Amy Herzog and directed by Betty Abramson runs from Aug. 1-Sept. 1, Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and four Sundays at 2 p.m., 45200 Little Lake St., Mendocino, 707-937-4477. For adults and teens. WMC member Maureen Eppstein's latest poetry collection has been accepted for publication by Main Street Rag Press, a fairly important independent publisher. Publication is planned for spring 2020.The collection, titled Horizon Line, is something of a retrospective. It merges observations of nature with reflections on aging.
