FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC MENDOCINO COAST STORYTELLERS Fourth Thursday, 6:30 p.m. “Coast Storytellers” provides an opportunity for writers and storytellers to read or speak their stories on various themes. It is a loosely organized event, with no membership or officers. These have traditionally been the fourth Thursdays of each month (third Thursday in November '19). Come read or speak a favorite childhood story (12 minute or less suggested), your own or someone else’s. Or come just to listen. $5 donation requested. Writing Workshop Led by Lisa Locascio A writing workshop capped at twelve participants to meet on seven Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m.: October 22, October 29, November 5, November 12, November 19, NO CLASS November 26, December 3, December 10 We will discuss readings from a variety of authors—poetry, fiction, nonfiction—and share and develop our writing in a workshop atmosphere. There will be some in-class writing as well. This is a collaborative class, meaning that the focus of some of our work together will be determined by members of the class, i.e., tell me what you want to work on and we can figure it out! The cost is $275, payable by cash, check, or Paypal. If you have questions or would like to join, contact Lisa Locascio [email protected] Lisa Locascio is the author of OPEN ME, published by Grove Atlantic in 2018, which will be published in Spanish as Las Noches Púrpura by Planeta in 2020. Open Me was a New York Times Editors' Choice, a semifinalist for the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award, an O Magazine "Top Ten Titles to Pick Up Now," and was named a most anticipated book of 2018 by many magazines. Lisa is also the editor of the anthology Golden State 2017: Best New Writing from California (Outpost19), and of the magazines, Joyland and 7x7LA, a magazine of ekphrastic collaboration. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times Review of Books, No Tokens, The Believer, n+1, Tin House, Electric Literature, and many other magazines. Lisa holds a PhD in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Southern California and a MFA in Fiction from New York University. POETRY WRITING WORKSHOPS AND MONTHLY POETRY OPEN MIC The workshops include samples of the various styles and techniques of poetry writing, displays of published works, in-session writing exercises along with readings and discussions of individual works produced during the workshops. WMC member Norma Watkins has a humorous story in the recently-released, hilarious anthology, Making Good Time: True Stories of How We Do, and Don’t, Get Around in South Florida. WMC member Ron Morita's local news story about the Rancho Navarro cannabis controversy appeared in the October 2nd issue of the Boonville newspaper, the Anderson Valley Advertiser.
"Rancho Nirvana" describes the origin of the dispute between Rancho Navarro cannabis growers and old timers, which divides the community and resulted in a $16,065 legal bill, slashed tires on a pickup truck, threats of physical harm, and appeals to the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors. It is a local interest news story, couched in a narrative that provides insight into the community.
WMC member Sonya Nesch has recently published a biography described in this announcement in the Sept 27, '19 issue of The Anderson Valley Advertiser.
"SONYA NESCH, one of our most valiant local soldiers in the unending struggle for decent mental health services in Mendocino County (and everywhere) has just published a very interesting memoir of her illustrious 101-year-old cousin, Jean Landis, a World War II pilot. Ms. Nesch's title explains much: WWII Pilot, Betrayal, Then Congressional Medal: A Great Ride for WASP, Jean Landis. WWII female pilots weren't recognized by the Army until President Obama awarded them their long-denied recognition. Ms. Nesch's book is available via Amazon, as is her invaluable book, Advocating for Someone with a Mental Illness." Off the Record by AVA News Service, October 2, 2019 WMC member Motherbear Scott wrote a review of the current MTC play, 4000 Miles, that appeared in the On Stage column of the August 8, 2019 issue of the Mendocino Beacon.
The play by Amy Herzog and directed by Betty Abramson runs from Aug. 1-Sept. 1, Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and four Sundays at 2 p.m., 45200 Little Lake St., Mendocino, 707-937-4477. For adults and teens. WMC member Maureen Eppstein's latest poetry collection has been accepted for publication by Main Street Rag Press, a fairly important independent publisher. Publication is planned for spring 2020.The collection, titled Horizon Line, is something of a retrospective. It merges observations of nature with reflections on aging.
