We have a ready-to-use structure, the four-line verse, tested by hundred of years non-professional songwriters. Holly Tannen will teach how to rhyme, to use rhyme to find out what you want to say, and to write verses to a known tune. We’ll write a song together, and start you off writing a song of your own. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC MENDOCINO STORYTELLERS Second Thursday February 13th 6:30 p.m. FEBRUARY TOPIC: “How We Met” or “That’s When I Knew” Or bring something you've been wanting to share “Mendocino Storytellers” provides an opportunity for writers and storytellers to read or speak their stories on various themes. It is a loosely organized event, with no membership or officers. Come read or speak a favorite story on the topic, your own or someone else’s. Eight minutes or less is requested. Or come to listen. $5 donation requested to benefit the Mendocino Community Center, 998 School Street. 2020 Literary Review LITERARY REVIEW DEADLINE EXTENDED The submission deadline for the Literary Review has been extended to March 31, 2020. They must receive any and all submissions no later than that date, and any payments in the form of a check must be postmarked no later than that date. Submission is open only to members of the California Writer Club. We’re looking for your best work—fiction, poetry, memoir, and essay, including excerpts from previously published writing—for publication in the 2020 California Writers Club Literary Review. Submissions are open to current members of California Writers Club and will be accepted from December 15, 2019, through March 31st, 2020. Works will be reviewed and selected for possible publication by a panel of acquisition editors through a blind judging process. You will be notified by email as to whether your piece will be included in the 2020 Literary Review shortly before publication in autumn of 2020. See Submission Guidelines and FAQs. The public reading will be held in the Little Theater, in the Lowery Building of the Ukiah campus, Room 730 on March 4th from 6-8 pm. Articles are 400 to 700 words and can be paired with photos or illustrations usually discovered in their database of 10,000 images. POETRY WRITING WORKSHOPS AND MONTHLY POETRY OPEN MIC The workshops include samples of the various styles and techniques of poetry writing, displays of published works, in-session writing exercises along with readings and discussions of individual works produced during the workshops. On the second Friday of the month, 2-3:30 pm, find your hidden poet within! Workshops are free. All ages are welcome. Visit the library site for more. Roger A. Schwartz of Mendocino, husband of WMC member Fran Schwartz, died at home on Dec. 25, 2019. He was 88 years old. Donations in Roger's memory may be made to the Mendocino Music Festival at mendocinomusic.org, and to the Mendocino Area Parks Association (Mendo Parks) at mendoparks.org. WELCOME TO THE

WMC member Lew Mermelstein has launched his action novel, Solomon's Net: A Tale Of Madness. Based on his experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia, the story compares indigenous healing arts to 1970's Western psychiatry. The reader will be drawn to the two protagonists, one American, the other Ethiopian.
