FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC LISA LOCASCIO "Lying and Telling the Truth at the same time: Writing From Life" Thursday, August 15th, 6:00 p.m. Few of us can avoid the allure of feeding our writing with content from our lives. Whether we consciously or unconsciously we import people, dialogue, settings or plots from our lived experience into our work, it is an unavoidable truth that our lives inform our creative output. How does one meaningfully—and ethically—mediate between the lived and the felt? How can we use our knowledge of our lives to create vibrant, shimmering poetry, fiction, and nonfiction? In this talk, we will explore examples of writers pulling from their lives and consider how we might learn from their triumphs and sorrows. Lisa Locascio, PhD, Creative Writing and Literature, MA in English Literature. 2019 Director of the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference, she teaches Creative Writing on the Coast at Mendocino College. Five Consecutive Saturdays September 7, 14, 21, 28, and October 5 10:00 a.m. to noon Community Center of Mendocino This course is open to all writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and memoir as well as playwrights because we will cover the basics of character development, dialogue, conflict, and plot common to all genres of writing. In addition, playwriting uniquely teaches a writer to think visually and theatrically to emotionally connect with an audience. No previous playwriting experience is required and we will cover the basics so that each student completes an original ten minute play in class.
