FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC LISA LOCASCIO "Lying and Telling the Truth at the same time: Writing From Life" Thursday, August 15th, 6:00 p.m. Few of us can avoid the allure of feeding our writing with content from our lives. Whether we consciously or unconsciously we import people, dialogue, settings or plots from our lived experience into our work, it is an unavoidable truth that our lives inform our creative output. How does one meaningfully—and ethically—mediate between the lived and the felt? How can we use our knowledge of our lives to create vibrant, shimmering poetry, fiction, and nonfiction? In this talk, we will explore examples of writers pulling from their lives and consider how we might learn from their triumphs and sorrows. Lisa Locascio, PhD, Creative Writing and Literature, MA in English Literature. 2019 Director of the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference, she teaches Creative Writing on the Coast at Mendocino College. MENDOCINO ART CENTER PHILIP ZWERLING Wednesday, August 28th, 7:00 p.m. WMC member Philip Zwerling will present the August 28th performance of the Mendocino Theatre Company's popular Reading Series. In the style of classic readers’ theatre, the actors use only vocal expression to help the audience understand the story, without the use of sets, costumes, or movement. Directed by Philip Regan, Mr. Zwerling will explore the love and relationships of three couples—from horror to comedy—in just over an hour. Come experience the plays: For Love or Money, Lost and Found, plus Personal Injury. The suggested donation is $10. MENDOCINO HOTEL

Do you have a blog and don’t know what to do with it? Can blogging be fun? Let’s talk about being a blogger and what that means. Marlene Cullen is enthusiastic about encouraging writers. Her series of books, The Write Spot anthologies, entertain as well as inspire writing. She hosts The Write Spot Blog, a treasure chest of inspirational gems for writers. Marlene's short stories, essays, and poetry have been published in literary journals, anthologies, and newspapers. She is a member of the California Writer's Club. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC EKPHRASIS VIII Saturday, October 12th, 4:30 p.m. At the Artists Co-op, (wheelchair accessible)—yellow building on the NW corner of Albion and Kasten in Mendocino. See the artwork paired with writing displayed in the gallery. This event is open to the public, so you’ll bring family and friends. Please bring wine or non-alcoholic beverage and an hors d’oeuvre to share. You’ll get to meet the artist, too. Great fun. October 17th: Readings of the Ekphrasis pieces by both art initiator and art responder writers while the artwork is projected at our Writers of the Mendocino Coast meeting, 6:00 pm, Mendocino Hotel. Open to the public. Many of the artists also attend this event. Always a favorite. Again, friends and family welcome. New Class at Mendocino College
Fall 2019 THE 210B Beginning Acting Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00-11:50 a.m. Learn fundamental acting techniques and terminology. All levels welcome—no prior work in theatre required. Students will develop ability through fun exercises, scene work, and improvisation. Instructor bio: Director, dramaturg, and producer, Virginia Reed has worked with professional theatres in Princeton, New Jersey, Los Angeles, San Francisco and numerous companies across the greater Bay Area. She has directed productions of plays by Shakespeare, adaptations of classics, experimental and contemporary plays, solo and devised performances, new plays in development by emerging playwrights, and founded a women's theatre company. PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP With WMC member PHILIP ZWERLING, recently retired as Director of the Creative Writing Program at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where he taught playwriting for ten years. He had previously served as Playwright-in-Residence for four years at Ursinus College outside Philadelphia. Five Consecutive Saturdays September 7, 14, 21, 28, and October 5 10:00 a.m. to noon Community Center of Mendocino This course is open to all writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and memoir as well as playwrights because we will cover the basics of character development, dialogue, conflict, and plot common to all genres of writing. In addition, playwriting uniquely teaches a writer to think visually and theatrically to emotionally connect with an audience. No previous playwriting experience is required and we will cover the basics so that each student completes an original ten minute play in class. Please send a short announcement to writersmendocinocoast@gmail.com WMC member Motherbear Scott wrote a review of the current MTC play, 4000 Miles, that appeared in the On Stage column of the August 8, 2019 issue of the Mendocino Beacon.
The play by Amy Herzog and directed by Betty Abramson runs from Aug. 1-Sept. 1, Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and four Sundays at 2 p.m., 45200 Little Lake St., Mendocino, 707-937-4477. For adults and teens. WMC member Maureen Eppstein's latest poetry collection has been accepted for publication by Main Street Rag Press, a fairly important independent publisher. Publication is planned for spring 2020.The collection, titled Horizon Line, is something of a retrospective. It merges observations of nature with reflections on aging.
