Biography
Jonathan Pazer is a poet, artist and abstract photographer. He is a graduate of Syracuse University, with an MS in Education and a law degree from Union University’s Albany Law School. He began to show his photography in 2011 in New York’s Hudson Valley. He was a founding member in 2012 and then chairman of the Gardiner, New York, Artists’ Open Studio Tour. He showed his abstract photographs and his ekphrastic poetry on the tour until 2018.
In 2015 he became a founding artist and member on the Board of Directors of Roost Studios, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community art space, gallery and gift shop in the village of New Paltz, NY. Roost Studios Gallery showcased contemporary work of Hudson Valley artists, as well as providing space for: Calling All Poets, Tai Chi, Tango, and kids programs. His solo ekphrasis show at Roost, in 2016, during The Year of the Poem, included more than fifteen of his abstract images, displayed alongside a poem written for each. This show coincided with the release of his self-published book, Seven Dimensions of the Unseen, which documented the show’s images and their accompanying poems.
Jonathan became a member of CAPS, Calling All Poets, a Hudson Valley poetry organization that was hosted at Roost. He was later invited to contribute poems and images to Ekphrasis 2017 (Volume 1), a poetry collection published by CAPS.
In the Fall of 2018 Jonathan and his wife, Andrea McFarland, also an artist, moved from New York to Mendocino, California. They are both artist members of the Mendocino Art Center and have participated in various member and juried shows there.
In November 2019, Jonathan had his first West Coast solo show at Mendocino Art Center (Exhibition Info) (MAC), where he exhibited both older images and poems, and a new series of digital pin-hole camera images taken in and around Mendocino and Fort Bragg. These new images were a unique combination of Jonathan’s long standing interests in origami and photography and were created with a hybrid pin-hole/digital camera, which he had designed and constructed himself. The MAC show featured these new images that were each accompanied by a new poem.
Following the success of his solo show at the MAC, in March of 2020, Jonathan was offered an opportunity to join the Mendocino Coast Photographers' Gallery in Fort Bragg, CA. If you visit the gallery you can see his latest photos, his driftwood and wire sculptures, and his current poetry book. He is presently in the draft stage of his second poetry and photography collection, which will feature images of the Mendocino coastline and poetry from the MAC show along with other images and new poems.
Before practicing the creative arts full-time, Jonathan practiced law and was a partner at Pazer, Epstein & Jaffe, a New York City law firm.
